The Retiring Writer

March 2021

Writing News-Still 1st person-izing and getting some ideas for the second book in the series. Well, I know who the protagonists will be and some of the mystery, but not the whole plot yet. I initially start off as a plotter, if you’re wondering about plotter vs. pantster, but once I start writing, I can go in unforeseen directions. Looking at this grid, I think I’m a ‘chaotic plotter’.

Personal News – My husband had surgery on the tendons (or are they ligaments? must research) that hold up the arch in his foot. I’ve been playing nurse, bringing him pain meds and food and blankets and cushions) and I’m now exhausted. Took the obnoxious dogs, Charlie and Nash, out the canyon for a run and to take some photos for the “About” page here on WordPress since I still had the default lady in black and white as my picture. It was freakin’ cold! I had on my new cardigan I got from Stitch Fix and it just wasn’t warm enough. Anyway, I got one picture that will sort of work after I messed with it in Luminar and then FaceTune and then Photoshop. You know how it is. You just can’t be satisfied with a straight-up image. That’s the way of the world these days.

Meme/Inspiration – We had dinner with family up at my father-in-law’s. That was quite an ordeal getting my husband there with his scooter and crutches. We had take-out and this was my fortune in my fortune cookie! I couldn’t believe it. Maybe I should play the lottery numbers on the other side, right?

Writing News – I’ve been working on changing the POV in the book I wrote during Nanowrimo in November. I was editing during December and it just wasn’t working. It felt like the writing was fighting me. It was so hard! So, I thought I’d try with the first chapter to turn it from third person to first person. I love it! It made such a difference. Now, I’m about 2/3 through. It’s taking longer than I thought because I’m editing the story as well as changing the POV, but it’s really coming along. So, when I write my future books in this series, I’ll start off with first person POV. It’ll save a lot of time!

Personal News – I thought I could retire this year from teaching this year, but when I called PERSI (public retirement for my state) I found out I won’t reach the age requirement until December. That means I have to sign a contract for ONE MORE YEAR. I was pretty bummed out, but it is what it is. I work in ELD as an ESL teacher and our department lost .25 in allocations. So even though I can’t retire, I will be at .75 which means that I’ll work full time Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, leave half day on Thursdays and have Fridays off. I’m thinking of it as practice retirement. Pretty psyched about that!

Meme/Inspiration – I was listening to a podcast–sorry, I can’t remember which one. I listen to a lot of them. Anyway, the author who was being interviewed said he “writes in the cracks of the day”. I really like that. I feel that I have to do that because I work full time. I really liked that saying. I have it on a post-it note stuck to my computer.
